How to Make the Most Out of Your U-Shaped Kitchen?

A U-shaped kitchen is considered as one of the perfect layouts for an efficient kitchen working triangle. You can easily move between your sink, cooking area and refrigerator as the arrangement of  different kitchen units positioned on three walls form the shape of the letter ‘U’. If you are planning a U shaped modular kitchen in your home, here are a few things you can do to make the most out of your kitchen:

    1. Prioritise efficiency:
A U-shaped kitchen gives you multiple options for creating a working triangle as you have three walls and two corners to take advantage of. When you are considering the different combinations you have to keep in mind factors such as:

      • How many people will be cooking in the kitchen at the same time?
      • Do you need a wide countertop for elaborate cooking?
      • Is there a window in the kitchen and the draft from which affects cooking?
      • Will you be using the kitchen only for cooking or also for entertaining?
    2. Use two tone colour scheme in a small space:
A U-shaped modular kitchen is ideally suited for larger spaces as it takes up three walls that can be used for storage. However, if you have a smaller kitchen and still want to opt for a U-shaped kitchen layout, select neutrals, whites and other lighter shades. Light colours will make the space  look bigger and brighter. You can also use a two-colour scheme, creating a contrast and making the space feel less boxy. In larger spaces, darker colours such as grey or blue can add a dose of drama and make the kitchen look bold and sophisticated.
Pro tip: Darker colours are better if the U-shaped kitchen area receives generous natural light.
    3. Place a dining table in the centre:
If you have a large kitchen, you can always have a kitchen island or dining table. Before planning a kitchen island, make sure that there is enough counter space and storage around the periphery.  A dining table and chairs or kitchen island can make your kitchen more inviting. You can cook while helping children with homework or chatting with your guests.
    4. Incorporate corner storage
One of the biggest advantages of a U-shaped kitchen is that you have three runs of cabinetry. This means you have ample opportunity to have storage space. However, to make the most out of your layout, make sure that you use the corner space properly. Modular corner units can make use of the otherwise dead space.
    5. Hide not-so-beautiful things
A U shaped kitchen offers you plenty of counter space. However, this also means that all essential items may end up being on the counter space, making  the kitchen look cluttered. A great way to keep your kitchen space attractive and beautiful is to create counter space cabinets with doors for daily appliances. For instance, there can be a dedicated cabinet for freestanding appliances such as microwaves, ovens, toasters and electric kettle. The doors can be shut when these appliances are not in use.
    6. Combine open shelves and cabinet
While cabinets are ideal for hiding things you do not want to show, open shelves are great for showcasing your favourite crockery or coffee mugs. Along with crockery, you  can keep beautiful accessories, artwork, and other decor elements to make the space feel homey and inviting.
